TrueNAS Head Executive Interview Chris Mellor, Blocks & Files Editor Published Fri 26 Jun 2026 // 14:27 UTC
TrueNAS, the flagship brand of iXsystems and the world’s most popular open-source NAS solution, is led by CEO Brett Davis. Since its 2002 launch, it has accumulated over 15 million downloads, more than one million users, and deployments across over 60% of Fortune 500 enterprises.

TrueNAS prioritizes tuned standard NFS sharing for high performance, such as NFS over RDMA on enterprise hardware. It lacks native parallel NFS (pNFS) support and has no Nvidia partnership, unlike enterprise file system rivals including IBM, NetApp and WEKA.

AI is sweeping the file storage industry unevenly, driving demand for faster file access while triggering memory and SSD shortages and price hikes — termed “Memflation”. We interviewed Brett Davis to discuss the firm’s stance on Memflation, pNFS, AI trends and TrueNAS’ future roadmap.

Blocks & Files: How does TrueNAS ease Memflation via SSD-HDD tiering, and potential public cloud or tape tiering?
Brett Davis: TrueNAS hybrid flash (disk+flash) solutions have grown vastly more popular in 2026. We are expanding tiering features to help users optimize flash and disk storage costs. Unlike traditional vendors that charge upfront for static features with declining long-term value, TrueNAS delivers continuous iterative upgrades to maximize existing hardware investment value. Major ongoing and upcoming enhancements will boost performance and efficiency for deployed systems, enabling smooth platform upgrades.

TrueNAS supports on-demand data offloading to public cloud, yet cloud deployment is not an effective Memflation mitigation method due to inherently high and rising cloud costs. TrueNAS on-premises solutions remain far more cost-efficient, a gap that will persist. Meanwhile, tape storage has become increasingly viable amid the current market constraints.

Blocks & Files: What is your take on pNFS and its value for TrueNAS users?
Brett Davis: pNFS outperforms Lustre and proprietary file systems like VAST for HPC and GPU cluster scenarios. TrueNAS is advancing open pNFS solutions covering open clients, storage and metadata components.

Blocks & Files: How do AI training and inference workloads impact TrueNAS users? Does your roadmap include dedicated AI-centric upgrades?
Brett Davis: Customer AI workloads are surging rapidly, requiring RDMA support, higher bandwidth and Kubernetes integration — all already available on TrueNAS. A leading AI inference chip firm relies on TrueNAS for storage deployment. Moving forward, tiered storage will be critical for cutting AI operational costs.

Blocks & Files: What is TrueNAS’ future outlook?
Brett Davis: We see strong growth across AI, media & entertainment, backup and virtualization infrastructure, driven largely by VMware/Broadcom ecosystem shifts. Our latest H-Series and V-Series platforms support flexible bay configuration for both NVMe and HDD drives. Users widely recognize TrueNAS’ superior flexibility and cost efficiency, with a unified software stack supporting all-flash, hybrid and disk-based infrastructures. Beyond storage hardware and software, TrueNAS is evolving into a broader data infrastructure platform.

Market demands are transforming rapidly: AI unlocks value from exploding enterprise data volumes, while traditional proprietary enterprise storage has become increasingly uneconomical to scale. Businesses avoid rigid architectures, closed ecosystems and escalating cloud costs — pain points drastically amplified by Memflation.

TrueNAS is uniquely positioned by balancing three core user priorities: enterprise-grade reliability, open innovation and optimized storage economics.

Our vision is to become the most trusted data storage platform, delivering enterprise-class performance, multi-scenario flexibility covering flash, hybrid, backup, virtualization and AI workloads, and cost advantages over legacy storage vendors.

Our global open-source community remains a core growth driver. As the world’s largest storage user community, it fuels continuous platform iteration via widespread testing and deployment. We will retain community trust while upgrading enterprise-grade support, hardware compatibility, security, scalability, lifecycle management and customer service capabilities.

Comment: The aforementioned leading AI inference chip firm is speculated to be Cerebras, though no relevant TrueNAS integration is documented in its training materials. No public evidence confirms official TrueNAS adoption by mainstream inference vendors including Groq, SambaNova and Tenstorrent.
