UK-based firm Stone Ram was founded in October 2014 in Towcester by industry veteran Simon Brown, who leads the company to help enterprises migrate and restore backup data. Prior to launching Stone Ram, Brown spent 13 years running his own consulting firm, Esdebe Consultancy, where he focused on Symantec NetBackup (NBU) services across mainstream platforms, including specialized catalog manipulation systems. He participated in hundreds of enterprise backup migration projects and assisted Symantec in developing its official Catalog Migration process, CATMAN, a standardized toolset available to Symantec’s global partner ecosystem.
The company’s co‑founder is Simon Brown’s spouse, Jasia (Janina) Brown, who oversaw all financial operations for the business.
Stone Ram built dedicated tools and standardized workflows tailored for NetBackup catalog migration, alongside a comprehensive portfolio of professional services, including:
• High-availability backup architecture design and deployment
• Backup catalog troubleshooting, repair and disaster recovery
• Catalog-independent data restoration capabilities
• Custom backup system design and implementation
• Round-the-clock enterprise-grade backup support
Its flagship product, Tranzman, enabled data recovery without reliance on the original backup software stack. Equipped with proprietary media readers, the platform could identify and parse a wide range of backup media formats. This unique capability allowed users to retrieve and restore data independently of legacy backup applications or their native databases. Tranzman supported media and disk-based backup imports from major solutions such as NetBackup, BackupExec, Tivoli Storage Manager, Data Protector and Commvault.
Tranzman also empowered businesses to merge and consolidate disjointed backup infrastructures into a unified environment — a capability that caught Cohesity’s attention following its Veritas acquisition. Cohesity confirmed the Veritas purchase deal in February 2024, with a long-term strategic goal of smoothly migrating Veritas NetBackup users onto its own DataProtect backup platform via low-impact, non-disruptive migration pathways, rather than forcing mandatory customer transitions.
Before the acquisition, Simon Brown shared on LinkedIn that he was seeking venture capital funding for Tranzman, the firm’s core cross-backup migration solution. The planned investment aimed to accelerate market expansion and extend compatibility with more source and target backup platforms. Cohesity ultimately identified Stone Ram through internal discussions with Veritas staff and partner networks.
Cohesity completed a quiet acquisition of Stone Ram and its small team of approximately six employees in October 2025, with the financial terms undisclosed. While the deal value was modest compared to Cohesity’s $3 billion Veritas acquisition — and given Stone Ram’s bootstrapped, VC-free operation — the technological synergy between the two firms was highly complementary. Stone Ram’s official website, Tranzman brand and standalone product offerings have since been discontinued, with its core technology fully integrated into Cohesity’s service portfolio.
Cohesity Chief Strategy Officer Sunil Moolchandani explained the acquisition rationale in an official blog post, stating that the purchase of the UK migration specialist supports Cohesity’s ongoing mission to strengthen customer cyber resilience.
He further noted that the Stone Ram integration accelerates and simplifies customer migrations from legacy NetBackup environments to the Cohesity platform. The technology delivers tangible customer benefits: streamlined infrastructure modernization, lower total cost of ownership, improved ROI, and a 75% reduction in overall upgrade timelines.
Following the acquisition, Simon Brown joined Cohesity as Director of Solutions Architecture, while Jasia Brown serves as a Program Manager within Cohesity’s Strategic Technical Acceleration Team (STAT).
